Saab 9-5 Aero XWD (A)

Finally, after 13 years (an eternity in the fast-paced automotive world), Saab introduces its all-new 9-5. Much has been discussed and written about General Motors’ not-too-long-ago sale of this Swedish manufacturer (first to Koeniesegg and finally to Spyker) in press all over the world, and therefore we shall skip the blah-blah and move on directly to the new car.

It is a big car – measuring 5008mm long, 2114mm wide and 1466mm tall, giving the new 9-5 an imposing presence from nearly every angles, but the exterior designers have managed to come up with a design that manages to conceal its bulk well. The styling of the new 9-5 is new and modern, yet strangely familiar for it incorporates key Saab styling elements, notably the wraparound-effect windscreen and the curved C-pillars.

Powering this flagship 9-5 is a 2.8-litre V6 unit that, with the aid of two turbochargers, sends 300bhp and 400Nm to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. 0-100km/h takes a decently quick 6.9 seconds, and its top speed is an electronically limited 250km/h.

In conclusion, this new 9-5 is a properly resolved Saab, and it has enough in its DNA to win back the loyal fans of the brand who have, while waiting for this, resorted to driving the more mainstream Teutonic suspects in this large executive saloon segment. It may not keep up with its rivals in terms of driving pleasure, but it more than compensates with a spacious cabin, superb ride comfort, and not forgetting its understated charm
